Hockey: Doc's dose leaves Reid a happy man

INVERLEITH coach David Reid was a happy man after watching Richard Docherty fire a first-half treble yesterday to help steer Inverleith into the quarter-finals of hockey's Scottish Cup.

The defender scored all three from penalty corners as the Edinburgh combine led 3-1 at the break, before a double from World Cup forward John Harris and a single from Olympian Stephen Dick set the seal on a 6-3 win at Peffermill.

Inverleith now play minnows Granite City in the next round on 21 March for a place in the semi-finals.

"This was a sound performance particularly as we haven't played since November because of the winter shutdown," said Reid.

Elsewhere, Edinburgh University playcaller Graham Moodie called on his men to use Saturday's 5-1 victory over in-form Stepps as a platform to kick on as the students bid to beat the drop from Division One.

Moodie, who played for Britain in the Athens Olympics, was happy that five different marksmen – Steven Morrison, Stewart Inglis, Jay Harman, Paul Heron and Paddy Thomson – found the net. "We were tied at 1-1 early in the second half but three goals in seven minutes turned the game for us," he said.
