Hockey: Champs thrash Inverleith

WHATEVER hopes Inverleith had of challenging for hockey's Division One title receded when they were hammered 7-2 at Kelburne.

The champions underlined their status as Scotland's best side by extending their winning run to nine games and move seven points clear of the chasing pack.

Callum Milne and John Martin scored late consolations for fourth-placed Inverleith who now have 15 points from nine games, 12 behind Kelburne and five adrift of second-placed Western.

Sixth-placed Grange shocked Clydesdale, who are third, 1-0 in Glasgow thanks to a goal in the dying minutes of the first half by Scottish international marksman Wei Adams, who deflected a cross from experienced Phil Sully.

In the relegation pool, Dundee Wanderers thumped Watsonians 4-0 while Mike Marshall netted a treble for improving Hillhead who beat Stepps by the same score to leave them pointless at the foot of the table.

Olympian Graham Moodie suffered disappointment for the first time in the second-half of the season when Edinburgh University's three-game winning run was stopped by a 2-1 defeat at second-placed Aberdeen who move to within two points of coach Moodie's combine.

CALA Edinburgh strengthened their grip on pole positing in Division Two with a 7-1 home win over Alpha Data Carnegie.
