Hockey: CALA's cup run ends in 12-1 thrashing by Kelburne

CALA's giant-killing exploits in the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup came to an abrupt end as the Edinburgh side fell 12-1 to the holders Glynhill Kelburne in yesterday's semi-finals at Peffermill.

Jonny Christie opened the scoring in 90 seconds and proceeded to add another with only five minutes gone. But CALA clawed their way back into the contest with a penalty conversion by Scott Sutherland and then forced Kelburne keeper Mark Fulton into a couple of crucial saves, but with ten minutes remaining in the first half Michael Christie made it 3-1.

Superior fitness told after the interval as the Scottish champions dispatched nine further goals, Michael Christie completing his hat-trick.

The other goals came from Gordon and Ross McIntyre, Gareth Hall, Willie Marshall, Don Tervit, Steve Crossett and Iain Scholefield.

In the other semi-final Western Wildcats belied recent indifferent form and gave Grove Menzieshill a 7-0 mauling. The game was over by the interval with goals from Scott McCartney, Douglas Simpson and Andrew Sewnauth from the spot.

After the interval Sewnauth scored another from a penalty, McCartney completed his hat-trick and Joe Simpson got the other with a simple tap in.

The women's cup final will be an all-Tayside affair for the first time as Grove Menzieshill and Dundee Wanderers both won their semi-finals against Milne Craig Western and GHK respectively. Grove seemed well in command against their traditional rivals when Nikki Kidd scored with a drag flick at a penalty corner to be followed by a fierce drive from Ali Bell that swept past keeper Kirsty McKenzie for a two goal lead. But the holders were taken aback by Sam Judge's set piece strike and in the end settled for 2-1.

Wanderers totally dominated the contest with second division leaders GHK, a hat-trick from Vikki Bunce and a couple by Heather Elder the catalyst to a comfortable nine goal victory.

Yesterday Grange threw away the chance to top the Subway national league with a shock 3-2 defeat at the hands of a depleted Greaves Clydesdale. Raymond Wrightson opened the scoring for the Titwood side in only five minutes, but Grange clawed their way back into the contest, Matt Conner sweeping a loose ball home and then Cammie Fraser making it 2-1 with a fierce reverse stick shot.

Adam Bain equalised for Clydesdale early in the second half but Grange's dreams of silverware ended with a great run down the right by Wrightson whose cross was diverted home by Alistair Bleach for the winner.

On Saturday Grange made short work of bottom side Aberdeen Asset Management with a ten goal whipping. Phil Sully notched a hat-trick, Martin Kelly and Ewan Milne both got two each while Gary Cameron, Cammie Fraser and Rob Barr from the spot got the rest.

Kelburne were also on the goal trail by putting nine past Inverleith. In the slaughter there were two each for Kiwi Steven Crossett, Michael Christie and Mark Ralph from penalty corners.Edinburgh University look consigned to the relegation play-off spot when they lost 2-1 to Clydesdale.

CALA started their promotion campaign with a 14-1 drubbing of St Andrews University in division two.
