Hockey: CALA all set for a gala week ahead

CALA Edinburgh hockey club face a momentous week after beating Granite City 4-1 at Meggetland to close in on the Division Two title and promotion.

Victory over bottom club Motherwell on Saturday at Meggetland could be enough to clinch the title on goal difference. And, on Wednesday, Edinburgh square-up to Hillhead in Perth (8.30pm) in the play-off for the final place in Division One of the indoor league.

Edinburgh's home win outdoors yesterday completed a weekend win double after they demolished nearest challengers Stepps 5-1 at Millerston on Saturday. Neil Allan, Edinburgh's coach, said: "It's a big week but we've only three players without an injury."

Elsewhere, Inverleith edged Dundee Wanderers 1-0 on Tayside thanks to a goal from Heriot-Watt student Steve Beattie two minutes before the break. The result means Edinburgh University face a play-off against the second-placed team in Division Two to remain in the top league.

Grange, who lost out to Kelburne in the title race, required a diving deflection from Cammy Fraser in the final two minutes to earn a 4-4 home draw with Western despite being 2-1 at one stage.
