Hockey: Bunce poses main threat to Western

The end-game in the Subway women's national indoor league presents an intriguing scenario. Milne Craig Western have a tenuous single-point lead over VWS Dundee Wanderers, who must take the three points in the head-to-head between the clubs this weekend to retain their title.

Western can actually afford to lose their opening fixture of the day against third-placed Grove Menzieshill and still win the championship by one point as long as they beat Wanderers.

If Western are to emerge victorious, coach Neil Menzies will have to come up with a plan to contain the wiles of Wanderers' playmaker Vikki Bunce, who scored six of her side's nine goals last time out. It would be wrong to describe the Dundonians as a one-person outfit, but she is undoubtedly the most exciting performer this season.

"I was disappointed with the level of mistakes we made against Wanderers, and as expected they were good at converting their opportunities," said Menzies. "We lost the ball too often when committed up-field and consequently allowed them to break and expose our lack of cover."
