Hockey: Brodie's effort is in vain

A GOAL from Amy Brodie of Edinburgh Hockey Club was not enough to save Scotland's women from being relegated from the elite of European indoor hockey on goal difference, writes NIGEL DUNCAN.

They slid through the trap door when they were held 3-3 by Poland at the EuroHockey Indoor Nations Championship in Duisburg, Germany, and the result has massive implications for Scotland who also now miss out on the Indoor World Cup.

On the domestic front, Inverleith remain in the indoor men's title race despite being beaten 4-1 by defending champions Menzieshill at Perth.

Stephen Dick netted the team's consolation strike against the Dundee side and Derek Salmond scored four as Inverleith beat Dundee Wanderers 6-2 in their other game.

Glasgow-based Western hold a two-point lead over Dundee side Menzieshill in the title race and, at the other end of the table, Grange drew 5-5 with Kelburne and edged Harris Academy 2-1.
