Hockey: Birse reflects on Uni draw

EDINBURGH University hockey skipper Duncan Birse had mixed emotions after the students earned their first point this season in a 2-2 draw with Inverleith.

The medical student was happy at getting off the mark in Division One but disappointed that they had lost both goals at set-pieces.

Edinburgh led twice in a poor game at Peffermill.

Birse said: "We played the better hockey and we're improving game by game but to lose to two penalty corners is disappointing."

Elsewhere, Ciaran Crawford fired a glory treble as early Division One pace-setters Clydesdale stayed two points ahead of the chasing pack at the top of the table.

The Glasgow club thrashed city rivals Hillhead 4-0 and Western remain in second spot thanks to a 5-2 victory at Menzieshill. Scott McCartney claimed a treble.

Alan Law scored a hat-trick as Dundee Wanderers won 7-1 at bottom club Aberdeen Asset Management.

In the Scottish Cup, Stewarts/Melville goalie Andrew Moody was outstanding but the minnows were still thumped 7-1 by Inverleith as Adam Mackenzie hit five goals.
