Hockey: Barr looking for Grange to build on winning start

A CONSISTENT win ethic is the secret behind securing championships and Grange will be tested in that department when they face Western Wildcats today in the Subway national league at Peffermill.

“We’re delighted with our two wins from our opening games, it gives us a platform to build on,” said Rob Barr, Grange captain. “We always have competitive games against Western, this game will be no different. We need to be at our best to win, but if we can take our game to Western we know we can score goals.”

A further three points tomorrow in a catch-up fixture with Edinburgh University would allow Grange to move alongside Kelburne and Inverleith at the top of the table.

Inverleith are firm favourites to hold on to second spot when they meet bottom side VWS Dundee Wanderers. However, Inverleith coach Stephen McCurry said: “All teams in Division One are good sides, and as a coach you cannot become complacent in any games at this level. Saturday’s game against Wanderers will be a very hard game for us.”

A fortnight ago newly promoted CALA Edinburgh broke their duck with a 3-2 win at Hillhead, and host a Grove Menzieshill side that are far better than their present second bottom spot.

In the women’s league, leaders Grove Menzieshill and third-placed Giffnock are favourites against GHK and Grange respectively, while CALA Edinburgh entertain Western Wildcats who have clawed their way to fifth spot in the league with some good results.
