Hockey: 5-1 win sees Grange close gap at top

GRANGE have closed the gap on Division One hockey pacesetters Kelburne to two points.

The Edinburgh club beat city rivals Inverleith 5-1 on Saturday at Peffermill with goals from Duncan Batchelor, player-coach Craig Harper, Scottish international Cammy Fraser and a double from teenager Duncan Riddell.

Adam Mackenzie netted Inverleith's consolation late on.

Kelburne beat Hillhead 5-1 on Saturday but surprisingly lost their unbeaten record in a 1-0 home defeat by Grove Menzieshill yesterday. Gavin Tomlinson netted from a penalty corner after 13 minutes.

At the other end of the table, Edinburgh University earned four precious points. They fought back from 3-0 down to earn a 4-4 draw at Grove Menzieshill on Saturday with David Ellis claiming the final goal late on. Richard McCorkell, Andrew Campbell and Fraser McHardy were the other scorers.

And the students edged fellow-strugglers Dundee Wanderers 3-2 yesterday at Peffermill and now move level on ten points with Wanderers in the race to beat the drop.

Meanwhile, Stepps have moved level on 46 points with Division Two leaders CALA Edinburgh following a 4-1 win at Harris on Saturday.

Edinburgh lost their unbeaten record in a shock 4-3 defeat at Carnegie.

Watsonians stay third after a 6-3 victory at St Andrews University while Waverley Inveresk Trinity held Falkirk 3-3 in Central Scotland.
