Highlander Williamson wins first GP3 race

HIGHLANDER Lewis Williamson won his first-ever GP3 race, and the 21-year-old from Golspie saved the win until the morning of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

In front of grandstands which were already packed with fans eager to see fellow Scot Paul di Resta in the grand prix, the Dundee-born dirver dazzled in the dry conditions to claim his first win for MW Arden.

But the Scot had to recover from a disastrous start to the latest GP3 race, a natural feeder series into F1.

Having lined up second on the grid, Williamson's car bogged down and he found himself back in fourth on the run to Abbey, behind leader Dean Smith (Addax), James Calado (ART) and Nick Yelloly (Atech CRS).

However, the Scot staged a stunning recovery to take a lead he would not relinquish.

"It's the best feeling I've ever had," said Williamson. "Everyone at MW Arden has worked so hard to get where we are today."
