Hibs to run rule over Fyfe

HIBERNIAN have taken Australian Iain Fyfe on trial as manager Bobby Williamson looks to add to his injury-hit squad. Fyfe, 21, who holds a British passport, was at Easter Road on Saturday to see Hibs defeat Livingston and will spend a minimum of a week with the club.

The defender, who has been capped by Australia at under-20 and Olympic squad level, has just completed a season with Sydney Olympic, having spent three years previously with his hometown club Adelaide City. With all Australian players having been released from their contracts due to league reconstruction, Fyfe is a free agent and so could sign immediately.

Meanwhile, Hibs are set to face an InterToto Cup trip to Lithuania or Estonia in July after UEFA last night completed the draw for the first three rounds.

Hearts have notified the SFA they will play in the competition, but with the Tynecastle club looking to clinch a UEFA Cup spot by finishing third in the SPL, their city rivals will become Scotland’s representatives, starting in round two.

The Scottish side will play the winners of match 17 from the first round, which is between sides from the Baltic states and will take place on the weekends of 3/4 and 10/11 July. Victory would see Hearts or Hibs go up against a side from either Denmark, Faroe Islands or France.

• The Dundee supporters’ group Dee4Life has offered to provide the 150,000 required to install undersoil heating at Dens Park, but only if it is given a say in the running of the club and a promise that Dundee will not play at Tannadice next season.

Dundee’s request for an exemption from the installation of undersoil heating was rejected by the Premierleague at its recent general meeting and has fuelled speculation that the debt-ridden club will now press ahead with a move to the home of their city rivals, United.

"All we are asking for is a say in the future decision-making," said Scott Glenday, a spokesman for Dee4Life, which will this week meet with administrator Tom Burton to agree the transfer of funds in return for a place on the Dens Park board. "We don’t think that’s unreasonable as we’re only interested in safeguarding the well-being and identity of the club."

• Scotland’s end-of-season programme was completed yesterday with the confirmation of an away friendly in Estonia on Thursday, 27 May. The match will be played in the Le Coq Arena in Tallinn with kick-off at 9.30pm local time, which is two hours ahead of the UK.
