Hibs take ex-Bolton striker on trial

Hibs boss Colin Calderwood has signalled he's ready to continue strengthening his squad despite the transfer window being shut by taking former Bolton Wanderers striker Ricardo Vaz Te on trial.

Calderwood made six signings during January, the arrival of the likes of Victor Palsson, Akpo Sodje, Matt Thornhill, Martin Scott and Richie Towell coinciding with an up-turn in the Easter Road outfit's fortunes as they've won their last three matches.

They were joined by Czech goalkeeper Jakub Divis who has yet to make his first-team debut but Calderwood insisted even then he wasn't finished in the transfer market, revealing he'd be taking a close interest in which players had found themselves free agents.

Vaz Te comes into that category having negotiated his release from Greek club Panionis, the Portuguese-born star having joined them only last summer.

The 24-year-old has been training with Hibs and played in a bounce match against Kilmarnock as he seeks to convince Calderwood to offer him a deal as he seeks to kick-start a career which has stalled through injury. A Portuguese Under-21 player, Vaz Te first came to Britain eight years ago, his performances on trial with Bolton prompting them to sign him on a three-year youth academy contract.

However, he made such an impression at youth level he was quickly promoted to the first-team squad, starting his first match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day 2004.

Although he went on to play almost 60 games for Bolton, Vaz Te's appearances became limited by injury and he was released last summer before he headed for his ill-fated spell in Greece.

Today Calderwood revealed Vaz Te, who is expected to remain with Hibs for the remainder of the week, won't be the only trialist to surface at the club's East Mains training centre.

Calderwood is expected to make major changes before the start of next season with the majority of the current squad out of contract shortly. He said: "We might bring in one or two further trialists in the next couple of weeks to have a view.

"But we've really got to make sure that the concentration is not so much on that but on the first-team fixtures."

Meanwhile, Hibs Under-19s came from a goal behind to beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4-1 with Scotland Under-17 internationalist Danny Handling scoring twice while David Crawford and Ross Caldwell also found the net.
