Hibs set to sign Ross County's Martin Scott

Hibs are poised to complete the signing of Ross County midfielder Martin Scott on a three-year deal before tomorrow night's clash with Rangers – and could also add Burnley striker Steven Thompson to their squad.

The Easter Road side are believed to have agreed a fee with the Dingwall outfit for Scott, after he was recommended to manager Colin Calderwood by his assistant Derek Adams.

Adams was Ross County boss for three years before joining Calderwood at Hibs in November, steering The Staggies to the Scottish Cup final last season, and is well aware of Scott's capabilities. Hibs were also interested in bringing Adam Rooney from the Highlands and had started talks with the Inverness hitman but Calderwood now looks to have turned his attentions to former Rangers and Dundee United player Thompson.

Those two parties are believed to be close to agreeing a deal but Calderwood refused to comment on any specific targets, saying only: "We're closer to getting things done in the transfer market.

"We're hopeful that we might have one done in time for tomorrow night's game. There are one or two other things that are burning along as well. We're hopeful of a couple more too."

Meanwhile, Hibs are on the trail of 6ft 5in Czech goalkeeper Jakub Divis, the Evening News can reveal today.

The 24-year-old has arrived in Edinburgh for a short trial as Calderwood seeks to bring fresh talent to the Easter Road club.

Divis currently plays for Slovakian side Tatran Presov but is out of contract in the summer. However, both Graham Stack and Graeme Smith will see their contracts with Hibs expire in a few months' time, two of just 16 first team players at Easter Road who find themselves in that situation.

Although Mark Brown appeared to be Calderwood's No.?1 choice, in possession of the gloves when the ex-Scotland star took over from John Hughes and retaining his place for the new manager's first 13 matches, he has been axed for the last two games. Smith, who hadn't played since the home leg of the Europa League tie against Slovenian outfit NK Maribor, has taken over between the sticks for the defeats by Ayr United and Motherwell.

But Calderwood has also made it clear Stack, who last played on the opening day of the season, a 3-2 win at Fir Park, before suffering a back injury, will also get his chance now he is fit again.

Asked if Smith was now his No.?1, Calderwood said: "I have three goalkeepers I am looking at. I have told them what is going to happen, they will all be getting their opportunity and Graeme Smith is having his opportunity at the minute."

The Evening News understands Smith will face Rangers in tomorrow night's SPL clash at Easter Road but, Calderwood revealed, there could be a further new face at Hibs before kick-off.
