Hibs boss takes on Dutch striker Denneboom on trial

Hibs boss John Hughes is poised to go double Dutch after taking former FC Twente striker Romano Denneboom on trial.

Hughes has already snapped up the 29-year-old's countryman Edwin de Graaf, who made his SPL debut as Hibs came back from losing an early goal at Fir Park to beat Motherwell 3-2 on the opening day of the season.

And now the Easter Road manager is casting his eye over Denneboom, who has played once for Holland albeit in a friendly against Liechtenstein six years ago.

Denneboom is available on a free transfer and Hughes has already stated he sees adding a further hitman to augment his already impressive strikeforce of Anthony Stokes, Derek Riordan and Colin Nish as a priority. At 6ft 2in Denneboom would certainly bring an added physical presence to Hibs' frontline and with almost 300 matches in Holland's top flight, the Eredevisie, he has plenty of experience.

The Evening News understands Denneboom plans to spend two weeks training with Hibs in the hope of persuading Hughes to offer him a contract. Denneboom began his professional career with SC Heerenveen, spending five years at that club before being sold to NEC Nijmegen where his performances in almost 100 games earned the interest of both FC Twente and PSV Eindhoven.

However, having become tired to lengthy negotiations with PSV, Denneboom elected to join FC Twente. However, he spent most of last season on loan at Sparta Rotterdam before his contract expired at the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Hughes was delighted with that victory against Motherwell, declaring the win had got the Easter Road outfit's season "off and running".

Hughes said: "I was delighted with the spirit and character, we were the better team in the secodn half and, to be honest, I felt we were good for two or three more."
