Hibs boss sets the standard for Stokes

HIBS boss John Hughes has revealed he'll be demanding more than just goals from top scorer Anthony Stokes next season.

The Republic of Ireland hitman grabbed 23 goals in all competitions as he helped steer the Easter Road outfit to fourth place in the SPL and into the Europa League.

But Hughes believes there's still much more to come from the 21-year-old, claiming the former Arsenal, Falkirk and Sunderland kid is only operating at 70 per cent of his capabilities.

He said: "I really do think he still has a lot more to come. He can be quicker, stronger, more explosive. But I also want to see him become more of a team player, although you then worry if you are going to take the goals away from him.

"However, I believe he can do it all – next season is going to be a big one for him."

Stokes himself admits he's been delighted with the way in which he has resurrected his career in Edinburgh following a disappointing spell at Sunderland who splashed out 2million on him to Arsenal after an impressive time on loan under Hughes at Falkirk.

Finally on holiday having been part of Ireland's squad for friendlies against World Cup-bound Paraguay and Algeria, the Dublin-born youngster said: "It was a gamble for me coming back to Scotland.

"If I had come to Hibs and not scored goals then some people would have said it was all over for my career. But I was always confident that no matter where I went I would be a success." Stokes admitted he'd taken a pay cut to come to Hibs but added: "It was definitely worth it because it is not all about money for me at this stage. I probably went for money when I signed for Sunderland and it did nothing for my career.

"Money isn't the driving force any more. At my age and stage, it is all about playing regularly and improving."

Meanwhile, Hibs defender Sol Bamba scored in his first match under former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson as the Ivory Coast drew 2-2 against Paraguay as the two nations prepare for South Africa.
