Hibs boss not sure he can appeal Miller's red card

HIBS boss John Hughes today admitted he fears being unable to appeal Liam Miller's red card at Fir Park as he faces the prospect of losing the influential midfield star for two matches.

Miller will automatically miss the visit of St Johnstone this weekend after being given his marching orders for a tackle on Motherwell's Jim O'Brien which sparked a free-for-all as virtually every player became embroiled in an unsightly melee.

But if referee Euan Norris decides Miller's dismissal merits the maximum 12 points being added to his disciplinary record it would mean the Republic of Ireland ace, who has also been booked three times this season, will pick up a further ban.

That would mean him also missing the visit of Kilmarnock a week on Saturday although he'd be free for the Active Nation Scottish Cup tie with Ross County and the third Edinburgh derby of the season.

Today Hughes, who was still adamant Miller's challenge was worthy of no more than a yellow card, revealed he was considering an appeal on his player's behalf depending on what is in Norris' report to the SFA.

He said: "I didn't think it was a red card, I feel the referee made a mistake. I thought he was going for a yellow but then the linesman got involved.

"I'll have to sit down and consider it. There are only certain grounds on which you can appeal and I'm not too sure if we'll be able to do so. I'll have to see what the referee has to say in his report before making a decision."
