Hibs boss calls on Hogg and Hanlon to fight for lost places

HIBS boss John Hughes says he won't shy away from tough decisions and is looking for Chris Hogg and Paul Hanlon to show strength of character to bounce back from the disappointment of losing their places in the side.

The duo were both left out of Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Inverness Caledonian Thistle as the manager handed debuts to new signings Francis Dickoh and Jonathan Grounds.

"I feel for both Hoggy and Paul but, at the end of the day, I had a decision to make and, having brought Francis Dickoh and Jonathan Grounds to the club, I went with them," said Hughes.

"Hoggy is a real hard-working boy and I really do sympathise with him but, as the manager, I have to make these decisions and I will continue to do so."

Club captain Hogg found himself in a similar position early last season but bounced back to regain his place and now Hughes is looking for both him and Hanlon to give him a headache with every team selection. The manager said: "I am looking to see what kind of reaction I get and if they are going to sulk.

"Paul would also have felt disappointed last weekend but he trained great on Monday and good on him for that.

"I also felt sorry for Steve Thicot on Saturday. He gave away the penalty and, in doing so, he was maybe a bit stupid. But he's also got back on with it in training this week.

"It is the character you look at. They maybe don't realise but you are constantly watching them and looking for that strength of character."

Meanwhile, Hughes admitted new signing Valdas Trakys may get a place on the bench for Saturday's SPL clash with Hamilton at Easter Road.

"Valdas has been back in Lithuania to get his things but will be back here later in the week," said the Hibs boss of the 31-year-old striker.

"Saturday is maybe too soon for him to start but we are a bit short up front - losing Darryl Duffy so soon after getting him was a real blow - so he may be on the bench."
