Hibs recovered from a shattering start in this all-action Scottish Cup tie at Firs Park.

They were a goal down in three minutes lost a goal to Bobby Jones in three minutes, but Colin Stein struck with two headers to put them ahead. But the 'Shire were not out of it yet. Jones equalised again. Then Hibs turned on the pressure and a Joe Davis penalty brought some composure to the team.

But first, Shire's Hamill, just inside his half, pushed a low ball to the well-placed Jones and the inside left picked his spot from ten yards to send an angular shot past Willie Wilson. Hibs' prompt reply brought a save at full stretch from Davie. Hibs levelled when winger Alex Scott's lob was nodded by John Cormack to Stein whose close-in header beat Davie in the 15th minute. In 22 minutes Hibs' pressure paid off with another goal. Stein, in a scramble with Davie at the post, saw his header reach the net. The match took a sensational turn when, two minutes later Shire broke away on the left and Jones, again the danger man, fired past Wilson.

Back surged Hibs and Cormack was pulled down in the penalty box by Reynolds. Davis came up to take the spot kick and blasted the ball past Davie.

In 36 minutes Cormack, after a tremendous run on the left, chipped the ball over to Stein who, from a few yards out, poked the ball past Davie to complete his hat-trick.

Three minutes later Stein, picking up the ball from the halfway line, raced up the field and squared the ball to Cormack who had a go close in with his head. The ball was blocked by Hulston but rebounded to the inside left who made no mistake.

Shire would not give up, however, and five minutes after the restart made it 5-3 thanks to Gillespie.
