Hibee History: Motherwell 2-3 Hibs October 10, 1978

Hibs' 3-2 victory at Motherwell must have given the Strasbourg officials who had come to watch their next UEFA Cup opponents something to think about.

Certainly Eddie Turnbull could not conceal his delight at his team's performance after two sub-standard displays against Morton and Clydebank.

Said Turnbull: "It was a great game and a fine result for us.

"The players knew better than anyone else that they had not done well in their last two games and were determined to go out and recapture their touch.

"It was nice to hit top form in front of the French representatives, because they will know what we are capable of away from home."

Hibs had won 4-2 at Fir Park on their previous appearance there in March and this display was an equally good one.

But Hibs had to work hard in the second half to transform a 2-1 interval deficit into victory. Colin Campbell substituted for Rikki Fleming at the break and, once MacLeod equalised from the penalty spot, Hibs made sure of preserving their unbeaten record when Gordon Rae smashed a great shot into the top corner of the net.

Campbell looked an extremely useful recruit and will have benefited considerably from his 45-minute outing in top-class company. There was only a 15-minute spell before half-time when Motherwell were on top. During their spell Clinging and Larnach scored two goals and Marinello missed a penalty kick and Hibs were glad to hear the interval whistle to get things sorted out.

Ralph Callachan had a much better game in midfield and laid on the opening for Rae's winning goal, which took Hibs into joint top place in the league.

Hibs' next task was to turn it on again the following Wednesday when they went to Clydebank in the second leg of a League Cup tie.

A repeat of the form they showed at Fir Park helped convince all the other teams in the Premier League that the Easter Road men were determined to make the most of their best start to the season for many years.

Poor Motherwell, though, they played remarkably well for a team anchored at the foot of the table, but the stark facts were that they had lost five games on the trot.
