Hibee History: Hibs pile on the misery at Tynie

Hearts 0-2 Hibs29 September, 1969

FIVE wins in a row for Hibs - and a capital start for new boss Willie Macfarlane. A Peter Cormack header gave Hibs a half-time lead at Tynecastle, but it was their second goal which knocked the derby fight out of Hearts.

Outside-left Eric Stevenson passed a fitness test, after being troubled by a leg strain, so Hibs were able to field an unchanged team.

Hearts, bidding to end five lean years without a league win at home against their city rivals, left out George Fleming from their published list of 12 players. Tommy Traynor, who broke a wrist only three weeks ago at Perth, was back on the left-wing with Donald Ford on the right.

Before the match started six spectators were led outside by policemen after minor incidents at the Gorgie Road end.

Both sides were packing tremendous effort into the contest and Hibs were thankful that Jim Black managed to get in the way of a scoring shot from Tommy Veitch. Gordon Marshall misjudged the corner, taken by Rene Moller on the right, and Traynor slammed the ball over the bar with the goalkeeper struggling.

Peter Marinello was the forward who looked most likely to succeed and yet he had no part in the move which enabled Hibs to take the lead in 39 minutes. Stevenson pushed the ball forward to McBride on the right wing and he swung a high centre towards the far post where Cormack leapt high to nod the ball past Cruickshank - a well-taken goal.

Hearts made an immediate effort to pull back that goal and Hibs got in a tizzy when Ford headed on a throw in. Hearts also created a possible equalising opportunity at the start of the second half when Traynor sent over a fast cross. Winchester got his head to it and consequently Ford ran past it to lose any hope of a goal.

Hearts were fighting strongly and Moller worried Hibs' rearguard with a tantalising cross. Winchester miskicked and it seemed that his mistake might be a blessing for it went to Ford, but he toe-ended the ball high over the bar. With 33 minutes gone, Oliver made a bad mistake in presenting Cormack with the ball. Hibs' inside-forward raced on into the penalty area only to be pulled down by Oliver.

Penalties have been given for less but the referee ignored Hibs' claims and Marinello was booked for passing some comment to the referee.

Five minutes later, Hibs scored a controversial second goal. A Blackley free-kick was hit on by Stanton and it reached McBride who looked yards offisde as he smashed the ball past Cruickshank from 14 yards.

Hearts needed a goal badly but there was no sign of it from an attack that couldn't get together Hearts were surprisingly short of spirit in the closing stages and the forwards, in particular, were easily beaten to the ball. Indeed, Stanton came close to adding to Hibs' tally after smart work by Cormack on the right. Stanton took a square pass and right-footed the ball just too high.
