Heriot's defeat rivals in Cup

HERIOT'S secured victory in the all-Edinburgh Scottish Cup first-round clash at Myreside yesterday, Kiwi Matthew Thomas taking five wickets to see them defeat Watsonians.

Batting first the visitors were indebted to Adam Lockhart-Krause (72) and Sean Weeraratna (70) to help them make 229 all out. Teenage seamer Paddy Sadler took 7-28 for the hosts.

Wicketkeeper Euan Stubbs top-scored with 69 for Watsonians, but Thomas's 5-44 made sure they fell 13 runs short in their chase.

Meanwhile, Grange crashed out after a brilliant 147 from Kruger Van Wyk saw SNCL Second Division side West Lothian create an upset. Van Wyk's runs helped his side to 242-8 and then Grange were skittled for 165.

At Grange Loan, Carlton piled on the runs against SMRH, Peter Deakin scoring 96 not out and overseas amateur Blake Dean 52 as the hosts posted 308-7. They then bowled the Inverleith men out for 123 to progress.

RH Corstorphine defeated Penicuik, while Edinburgh just pipped East League side Fauldhouse by 11 runs in a high-scoring encounter.
