Heriot's 27 - 14 Stew-Mel FP: Hill has final say to clinch tie for Heriot's

Heriot's coach Bob McKillop admitted that both teams were rusty in this Edinburgh derby.

Going into the Premier Cup clash at Goldenacre, neither side had played a competitive fixture for eight weeks and it showed at times. Nevertheless it was an engrossing match, with the outcome not decided until the last play, when Heriot's Jason Hill scored under the posts.

Moments before that, Stewart's Melville, who were 20-14 down, had nearly scored a try under the posts, only for the ball to be dislodged from Hayden Lingard's grasp yards from the line. McKillop said: "Both teams put in a lot of effort with there being some rustiness after such a long break, but it is just good to be back in action again."

There were a number of chances, but it took until just before the break for the hosts to open the scoring through a converted Richard Mill try.

When the stand-off added his second of the day on 49 minutes to make it 15-0 it looked as if Heriot's had finally broken down the Premier Two side's resolve. But a try double from back-row Donald Sangster meant the visitors were just a point behind with 11 minutes remaining.

There was a hint of a forward pass by full-back Colin Goudie to set up Struan Dewar for Heriot's third try in 75 minutes before Hill's late score.
