Hearts weighing up Jonathan Toto move after Cameroon striker impresses on trial

Hearts are awaiting more information on 20-year-old trialist Jonathan Toto before deciding whether to offer the striker a deal. The Cameroonian, who has a French passport, impressed in a cameo spell in the pre-season friendly against Blackburn, and scored twice in a closed-doors win over East Fife on Tuesday night.

Having already signed Kevin Kyle and Stephen Elliott this summer, Jim Jefferies may feel that a third new striker is not his priority. Yesterday, though, while refusing to commit himself, the Hearts manager was cautiously optimistic about Toto.

"Before we can do anything, we have to find out what can be done," Jefferies said. "When you bring in a young player like that, one or two clubs have been caught on the hop, ending up facing 50,000 or 60,000 in compensation.

"Until we get all the paperwork done, nothing can be done. We've got clearance from (French club] Metz, where he was as a young boy, but the lad spent a year in Cameroon when his father wasn't well - he played over there.

"We haven't had anything from that end of it yet. Until we get that, there is no point in discussing it, because we might not be able to get him.

"He's here training, playing in bounce games, the agents are working hard to get that information for us. Once they get it and we check that it's right, we will decide what we're going to do."

Toto has at least done enough to encourage Jefferies to think long and hard about him. The coach explained that playing well in a competitive match for the first team is tougher than turning it on in a low-key friendly, but so far at least Toto has done everything asked of him.

"We never knew anything about him until we gave him training facilities. He caught our eye and I gave him 16 minutes or so against Blackburn in pre-season.

"But until we get clearance that he is who he is, for a start - and that sometimes comes into it - then we'll wait until we see if we can play him.

"Every day he's been in training, you see what he's got and he has scored a lot of goals in games. I think he's got something. But it's a step up to play in the first team."

Tomorrow's visit to Hamilton may come too soon for Toto, but a run out in the Co-operative Insurance Cup game against Elgin on Tuesday is a possibility. Jefferies' more immediate concern regarding strikers, however, is who to start at New Douglas Park, with Kyle still short of match practice and Elliott sitting out training yesterday with a hamstring strain.A decision will be taken on Elliott today, but it is likely that his near-namesake Calum Elliot will start alongside Kyle, having impressed and scored in last week's draw with St Johnstone.

Hearts' last visit to Hamilton was one of their low points last season, when six red cards were shown during and after the game. Then Hearts captain Michael Stewart later had his sending-off downgraded to a yellow card, but that hardly detracted from the fact that the team had shown a level of indiscipline which Jefferies, who was not at the club at the time, has stressed is simply unacceptable.

"We've talked about the discipline side and I had a chat with the players pre-season," he said. "I spoke to the captain and the vice-captain first, because it had to be done.

"I made the point that we're not going to discipline players for every single booking. Referees get it wrong sometimes, while sometimes you have to take a booking for the cause. So they won't get fined for every yellow card.

"But, having looked through the numbers, the biggest percentage were for retaliating, talking back, kicking the ball away, silly things. That's what we need to cut out.

"It has improved since we came here and the boys know where the line is drawn and they've agreed to it. But it doesn't stop us competing. It's a competitive game and the ball has to be won. The boys understand that."

Eggert Jonsson and Ryan Stevenson are still suspended for tomorrow's match, but Ismael Bouzid is available.
