Hearts help youths reject life of crime

HEARTS have teamed up with the Youth Offending Service to give a new opportunity to young people in trouble with the law.

The 'On The Ball' initiative provides constructive support to youngsters, helping to reduce their involvement in anti-social behaviour.

The programme, for young people who have come to the attention of the adult criminal justice system, is funded by the Lothian and Borders Community Justice Authority.

It helps the youngsters develop an insight into their behaviour and attitudes and to develop positive personal and community networks.

The work is combined with community sport to provide what is described as a "healthy learning environment".

A pilot course has already been run involving several young men and they have made positive changes in their lifestyles and are returning to offer support and guidance to the new intake.

The football part of the course involves motivational talks from former players, SFA Coach Education courses and team building activities based at Tynecastle and Riccarton.

Hearts community manager Alan White said: "We are delighted to once again partner with the Youth Offending Service in Edinburgh to deliver such a valuable and effective community programme.

"Football is a fantastic motivator for young people and we are confident that, with the resources we have here at Hearts, combined with the expertise that exists within our partners, we can have a lasting and positive impact on these young people's lives."
