Harvey hits a hat-trick in 8-0 rout

In THIS hastily rearranged league fixture, with Tranent's Scottish Cup tie postponed yet again, it was hat-trick hero striker Paul Harvey who stole the show as Tranent came away with a thumping 8-0 win over Dunbar.

Following the victory, Tranent manager Brian Johnstone praised the attitude of his players.

"All we ask them to do is beat any side they face but to score eight goals in the process is a huge bonus," he said.

Tranent had the best of starts when they grabbed a two-goal cushion in the opening three minutes.

First, James McPartlin's shot missed the target but Sean Lally was on hand to knock the ball home from two yards.

Then McPartlin himself beat the offside trap to lob the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.

There was then a lull in proceedings until the 25th minute when they added a third. A free-kick from McPartlin was fumbled by the keeper, allowing Tadg Moriarty to score from about two feet.

Five minutes later, Tranent had a fourth goal to celebrate. Alan Horne ran from a possible offside position to score from ten yards out.

Tranent went nap only five minutes into the second half. Paul Harvey scored it with a super individual effort. He picked the ball up in the old inside right channel before beating three players and curling a great shot round the keeper and into the net.

On the hour-mark, Mel Graham found himself free down the left wing. His long, high cross was met by new signing Graeme McCaul. The substitute side-footed the ball home for his first goal since signing from Bonnyrigg.

Then with 15 minutes to go, they had a seventh. A free-kick from Mel Graham was knocked on to the bar by goalkeeper John Johnstone but, when the ball fell, it was Paul Harvey who reacted first to knock the ball home.

Finally, with the full-time whistle approaching, Harvey completed his hat trick.

He collected a super long ball from Keith Salton down the left wing, cut inside and curled another super shot into the top corner despite the efforts of the Dunbar defence.

Tranent boss Johnstone was understandably delighted with the performance, as well as the impressive scoreline.

"We have some big games coming up so it was great to see how the players applied themselves," he said.

"We asked them to win this one but they excelled themselves. After that start to the game, teams can take their eye off the ball but our lads didn't do that.

"They kept going to the final whistle. It was a super performance."
