Hanson sixth as wind foils racers again

TEENAGER Elliot Hanson finished sixth in the Laser Radial Men's World Championships at Largs after no racing was possible for the second consecutive day.

The wind conditions in Scotland yesterday again conspired against the competitors, meaning Poland's Marcin Rudawski successfully defended his title, with the 16-year-old Hanson just outside the top five.

Ali Young was the best of Team GB's women sailors after she finished in 12th place behind winner Sari Multala from Finland, who also defended the crown she won last year at a breezy regatta in Japan.

"I am pretty happy really," said Multala. "It was a pretty nervous day. Except for the one race, the best thing has been being able to sail consistently and that means being able to come back when I have maybe been not right in the top group at the beginning of races and in all kind of conditions. It's been about both speed and tactics, but perhaps mostly about tactics. A little bit of boatspeed at times.

"At least here there has been a variety of conditions whereas Japan was pretty much the same conditions all the time, and here the waiting does make it all a bit harder mentally."
