Miley, who has won two silver medals so far, was second in her morning heat and sixth-fastest qualifier but could not live with the pace set by the home favourite.

Denmark’s Lotte Friis, the 1500 free world record holder, claimed silver in 3:58.85, while France’s Coralie Balmy gave the hometown crowd an additional celebration with a bronze-winning 3:59.80.

Miley had a personal best of 28.87 seconds in the 50-metre backstroke heats but could not get amongst the medals.

Warrender’s Craig Benson was just outside the Scottish record in the 50-metre breaststroke but his 27.55 seconds left him only
seventh in his heat.
