Hannah Miley adds bronze to her Turkish medal haul

Hannah Miley claimed her second medal of the World Short-Course Championships when she battled her way to third in the 200 metres individual medley.

While Miley made her second visit to the podium, it was Ryan Lochte who again took centre stage as he set his second world record in 24 hours, this time in the 100m individual medley semi-final.

Miley, pictured, won Britain’s only gold medal so far when she held off China’s Olympic champion Ye Shiwen in the 400m individual medley on the first night of competition. Given the longer race is Miley’s specialist event, she was less likely to challenge Ye for gold in the 200m last night.

Fourth going into the final freestyle leg, the 23-year-old had moved up into third by the last turn and she held off Zsuzsanna Jakabos of Hungary and Madeline Dorado of the United States to touch in two minutes 7.12 seconds.

Ye produced a blistering freestyle to win in 2min 04.64sec.

The Scot was taken by surprise with bronze, although she was disappointed with the time which was 0.91sec down on her best. She said: “I’m so chuffed to come away with a medal. That was probably going to be one of the hardest races here – I thought maybe I’d be fourth at the best, maybe fifth or sixth. I’m a little bit gutted with the time. I was hoping to do the same time I did at Euros because that felt absolutely amazing. But I can’t knock getting a sneaky bronze.

Ye’s freestyle speed sparked much questioning at the Olympics but for her rivals it means they have to find a response.

Miley added: “I’ve been trying to work on my backend speed. Ye Shiwen can do it so it’s something we’ve been trying to strive for to show it’s possible to come back really, really strong.

“Those girls go out so hard and it’s a matter of hanging on for dear life and that’s what I did.”
