Hanagan ruled out of Ebor at York

PAUL Hanagan endured a mixed day at Newcastle as he rode a double on the card and picked up a riding suspension that rules him out of the totesport Ebor at York on 18 August.

The title-chasing jockey headed to Gosforth Park with 113 winners for the season to his credit and added to his tally on board the Kevin Ryan-trained Sharp Eclipse (5-2) in the Sendrig Construction Handicap.

Hanagan had to be at his strongest to guide the three-year-old to a first career success at the 11th attempt, but the stewards handed him the one-day ban for using his whip with excessive frequency. Hanagan went on to complete his brace in the Support Good Causes At sportpool.co.uk Rating Related Maiden Stakes as 3-1 shot Mufti, trained by Jeremy Noseda, proved much too good for his rivals.

On the south coast, a dead-heat to the feature John Smith's Brighton Mile saved the first day of the August Festival meeting from becoming a damp squib.

Spectators, and initially the jockeys involved, felt Kieren Fallon and 3-1 favourite Licence To Till had got the edge over Hayley Turner and Lastkingofscotland, but the photo reprint proved otherwise. The pair had been hammering it out along the stands rail for the final two furlongs and only the bobbing head of Lastkingofscotland (8-1) helped the first prize of over 8,000 to be split.

Fallon reported: "I knew Turner was catching me, but I thought I had won," while his joint-winner said: "I thought we got caught and usually if you're doubtful then you're right, but that's a nice result."

While the two jockeys regularly clash, the trainers involved operate at opposite ends of the spectrum. License To Till's handler Mark Johnston receives dozens of equine bluebloods, Conor Dore has only about 10 other inhabitants at his Lincolnshire stable apart from Lastkingofscotland. Dore said: "I've only had him a couple of months and I got him for six grand out of a seller. It's a lovely surprise as I thought we were beat."

Meanwhile, Coral have eased Harbinger to odds against for the Juddmonte International following the ground warning connections issued on Tuesday.

The Dansili colt became the highest-rated Flat horse in the world after destroying his rivals in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, and York's Group One on 17 August is his intended next port of call. However, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing manager Harry Herbert insisted ground conditions must be right for the star four-year-old to take his chance and that has caused an ease in his price.

Coral are now offering 11-10 from even-money for the ten-furlong contest and have cut Henry Cecil's Coral-Eclipse winner Twice over to 7-1 from 10-1.

"We were keen to lay Harbinger anyway, on the basis that he would face top-class opposition at York, but now connections have issued a warning regarding his participation, we felt it was only fair to ease him to odds-against at this stage," said Coral's David Stevens.

Elsewhere, Fran Berry and Alan Munro have been named as the final two riders to compete in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday.

Officials were left searching for replacement jockeys after Ryan Moore, Fallon and Frankie Dettori pulled out earlier in the week, but the teams have now been finalised. Turner, riding in her fourth Shergar Cup, will captain the Great Britain squad and is joined by Jim Crowley and Munro. Richard Hughes, twice winner of the Shergar Cup Silver Saddle, was drafted in as captain of the Irish team following Fallon's defection and he is accompanied by Pat Smullen and John Oxx's stable jockey Fran Berry.

King George-winning jockey Olivier Peslier captains the European hopes and will have Belgian jockey Christophe Soumillon and Italian Umberto Rispoli on his side.

The jockeys for the fourth and final team, the Rest Of The World, are South Africa's Anton Marcus (captain), Japanese rider Yasunari Iwata and Australian Luke Nolen.
