Gymnastics: Purvis agonisingly close to bronze

DANIEL Purvis produced a superb performance to take fourth place at the 2011 artistic gymnastics World Championships men’s all-around final in Tokyo.

Purvis finished with a total of 89.932 points and came agonisingly close to a podium place, just 0.323 marks behind Japan’s Koji Yamamuro.

The title was won by local hero Kohei Uchimura after one of the greatest all-around displays ever seen saw him record a huge 93.631 points tally, with Germany’s Philipp Boy taking second with 90.530.

Purvis said: “To go clean and be so close to a medal is a bit bittersweet, but overall I have to be really happy with the result.”

The 20-year-old was on course for a bronze medal going into the final event, the high bar, but Boy scored 16.066, enough to climb to second place and leave Purvis out of the top three.
