Gymnastics: Glasgow named one of four World Cup hosts

Glasgow has been named as one of only four host cities for the revamped Federation of International Gymnastics World Cup events in 2011 and 2012.

The city beat off tough competition from around the world to join Stuttgart in Germany, Jacksonville, Florida, USA, and Japanese capital Tokyo in staging the prestigious events over the next two years. A new spectator-focussed format will see the world's top gymnasts battle it out over two sessions - the Men's Artistic Gymnastics All Round Final and the Women's Artistic Gymnastics All Round Final. Participation is limited to the World's top eight ranked male and female gymnasts.

This makes a change from the Glasgow Gymnastics Grand Prix events of the past 14 years, which involved individual apparatus finals in one longer competition session. The first of the new World Cup events to be held in Glasgow will be at the Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena on Saturday 16 April 2011.

The last Glasgow event under the old format was held at the Kelvin Hall last month and British gymnasts walked away with five medals.
