Varsity Golf: Mathias Eggenberger secures victory

Mathias Eggenberger held off Stirling team-mate Jack McDonald to record a wire-to-wire victory in the Scottish Student Championship at Moray.

Closing rounds of 71 and 70 for a total of 280 gave Eggenberger, a Swiss international, a two-shot success.

After a shaky start to his morning round, Eggenberger came home in five-under to stop McDonald overtaking him, as last year’s Scottish Golfer of the Year carded a 69 then also closed with a 70.

Kit Holmes completed a Stirling 1-2-3 on 289 and the leading trio combined with colleagues Zander Culverwell and Mike Howard also claimed victory for Stirling in the team event.

With a total of 561, they won comfortably from Aberdeen (596) with the University of the Highlands and Islands third on 598.

Meanwhile, there was a nail-biting climax to the ladies’ individual championship
after overnight leader Georgia Gilling (Stirling) had her advantage trimmed to a
shot by playing partner Iona Stephen (St Andrews) in the third round.

The lead changed hands between the pair as well as St Andrews captain Gabrielle MacDonald a few times in the final round before Gilling emerged victorious.

Despite a final-hole bogey, she closed with an 82 for 308, winning by three shots in the end as Stephen and MacDonald tied for second.

Some consolation for them was that, in tandem with Gemma Bradbury and Maranda Brain, they lifted the team title.
