THE Scottish Golf Union now appears to have the support it requires for an amalgamation with the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association.

It follows Stirlingshire delivering a “unanimous yes” to the proposal, joining 11 other Area associations in indicating such a vote at a special general meeting at the end of next month.

“We held a meeting with our clubs on Tuesday night and Stirlingshire is unanimous in favour of amalgamation,” said the Area’s SGU delegate, Neil MacDonald.

While unable to say for certain yet that the matter will now reach the conclusion it is seeking, having failed at the first attempt four years ago, the news has been welcomed by the SGU.

“We’re delighted with the Stirlingshire response,” said the governing body in a statement issued to The Scotsman. “It is not appropriate for us to comment on other Areas’ progress, as they are going through the formal process laid out.”

According to a poll carried out by this newspaper, Angus, Ayrshire, Borders, Clackmannanshire, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Lothians, North, North East, Perth & Kinross, and South are also set to back the proposition. The remaining four Areas are still in discussions with their clubs.
