SGSL quartet urged to make use of Coltart and Cowen

The latest four recipients of funding and support worth £23,000 to each player have been urged to use two well-known golfing figures to help them achieve their 2014 goals.

Challenge Tour duo David Law and Duncan Stewart, along with Ladies European Tour pair Pamela Pretswell and Sally Watson have been selected to receive this year’s backing from Scottish Golf Support Limited (SGSL).

An initiative backed by the Scottish Government to help the country’s young professionals progress in their respective careers, it was launched in 2010 and will see a total of £1 million invested over at least five years.

Stewart and Pretswell, both also in Team Scottish Hydro this season, are receiving the support for a second year but Law and Watson, both 22, are on board for the first time.

A two-times Scottish Amateur champion, Law has made steady progress in his pro career, wining on the third-tier Pro Golf Tour and using it to secure a Challenge Tour card this season.

Watson, who also had a sparkling amateur career, is moving in the right direction, too, after returning from America, where she went to Stanford University, and securing an LET card.

Louise Martin, chair of sportscotland, is pleased with the scheme’s success so far and has retained the services of both former Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart and leading coach Pete Cowen to support the quartet, as well as other younger players at SGU and SLGA level.

“The guidance from Andrew Coltart and Pete Cowen is an invaluable benefit and I would urge the players to take advantage of all that they have to offer,” she said.

Two others – Scott Henry and Kylie Walker – are also receiving “ongoing” SGSL support.
