Scots golf SGU-SLGA merger to get go-ahead

sCOTTISH golf’s long-awaited merger is finally set to be rubber-stamped today by the men’s Area associations.

The Scottish Golf Union’s proposed amalgamation with the Scottish Ladies Golfing  Association is the only item on the agenda at an extraordinary general meeting in Stirling.

Four years ago, the Areas voted 10-6 against the move to bring the home of golf into line with most other countries in  the world.

However, it would be a major surprise if the new proposal didn’t secure the required two-thirds majority, having already received unanimous backing from the SLGA membership. Last week, a meeting of clubs  affiliated to the Lothians Golf  Association delivered a 47-2 vote in favour.

“There’s a recognition that getting amalgamated is long overdue,” said SGU chairman Tom Craig ahead of today’s  decisive meeting.

“There’s a greater understanding of where Scottish golf is standing at the moment and a recognition that we have to change. We are out of sync, out of date, with other sports.

“The challenge has always been to find a sensible compromise – you have to try to be fair to all parties.”
