Ryder Cup: McGinley wants Scots fan to get loud

The Irishman wants the match to be the “noisiest” in the event’s history as he bids to counteract Tom Watson’s popularity in the home of golf.

McGinley, a true sportsman, will not try to turn the fans who adore Watson against the five-times Open champion.

But, at the same time, he is hoping the home supporters will pin their colours firmly to Europe’s mast.

“We all know that Tom Watson isn’t only a great gentleman but he’s very wily too and will be playing up to his popularity in Scotland,” said McGinley.

“I know that is going to happen and I certainly won’t try to stop it happening.

“At the same time, I want this to go down on record as the noisiest Ryder Cup ever,

“As players, we all love the noise and the spectators can’t shout loud enough and can’t create enough atmosphere.

“We all know there is a line we can’t cross but, at the same time, we want the fans to show passion.”

McGinley was speaking as he appeared on stage with his two assistant captains, Sam Torrance and Des Smyth, at last night’s European Tour ‘Players’ Awards’ at a Heathrow hotel.

Asked what his role would be at Gleneagles, Torrance replied by using a curling analogy.

“We’ll be the two guys sweeping and clearing the way for this guy,” he said looking towards McGinley.

First Minister Alex Salmond also spoke at the event, which set the scene for Scotland’s first Ryder Cup since the 1973 match at Muirfield.
