Europe’s men claimed the Ryder Cup at Medinah last year in a dramatic 14.5-13.5 comeback win and talisman Ian Poulter was among those to heap praise on the women’s team.

“Congrats to the Solheim Cup European team on their impressive victory. Great job girls,” he posted on Twitter.

Colin Montgomerie captained the men to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010 and he too took to the social media site to hail Liselotte Neumann’s side.

“Congratulations @LETgolf @SolheimCupEuro Fantastic win. Well played all of you,” he Tweeted.

Melissa Reid was a member of the victorious European team in 2011 and, despite the win this time upsetting the odds, the Derby-born 25-year-old insists she was always confident of victory.

“Going into the Solheim I thought we had such a strong team,” she told BBC Radio Five Live. “I had a feeling that we were going to win. I didn’t realise we were going to win by quite a margin.”

Laura Davies, who was a member of Alison Nicholas’ winning Solheim Cup team in 2011 at Killeen Castle, praised this year’s winners on their great 18-10 victory.

“It [Saturday] was probably the best day of European golf in the Solheim Cup. You can’t beat that – a whitewash in the fourball and a decent morning to boot.”
