Ryder Cup 2014: £28,000 a week for rental home

The tournament at Gleneagles in Perthshire will mean the five-star resort’s hotel is fully booked for players and officials forthe European and American teams.

However, now golf fans are being given a chance to stay nearby. Management has just “released” a number of holiday homes for let in Glenmor Village – a development of 52 lodges and apartments in the grounds near to the PGA centenary course where the tournament will be played.

The event next September will see the world’s top golfers, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, do battle for the US and European teams. It is the first time the event has been staged in Scotland since 1973.

A four-bedroomed home for a week, starting on the Saturday of the tournament, will cost £28,000, while a three-bedroom property will set a Ryder Cup follower back £21,000.

There are also two-bedroom homes available for the whole week of the tournament at £21,800.

People who rent the properties will be offered tickets for the golf tournament itself at a cost of around £400 per person.

The homes feature “ultra-modern” fitted kitchens, spa-style bathing rooms and open patio terraces.

They are also kitted out with a hi-tech, built-in sound system, underfloor heating and a log-effect gas fire.

The houses will allow wealthy golf enthusiasts to get as near to the action as possible.

A sales brochure described the properties as “a collection of luxurious, superbly appointed two, three and four-bedroomed holiday homes set around their own village green”.

Prospective purchasers have been advised that there will be “disruption to leisure and dining facilities” at the hotel during their stay.

Hundreds of Scots living near the venue have put their homes up for rent during the Ryder Cup competition, with charges starting from around £2,500.

While some of the properties are centred on Gleneagles, and in nearby towns and villages such as Auchterarder, Crieff and Comrie, agents say they have had interest from homeowners as far away as Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Borders.

One company, Glen Golf, is offering a number of large-scale properties for rent during the event, including Cloan Castle, an eight-bedroom mansion owned by Viscount Richard Haldane three miles from Gleneagles that has played host to the likes of Peter Pan creator JM Barrie and evolutionary biologist Julian Huxley.

Also available is Lintrose House, near Cupar Angus, which can accommodate 12 adults at a cost of £1,500 per day on a 150-acre estate with space to land and park a helicopter.

Many of the 60,000 or so golf fans expected to descend on Gleneagles at the Ryder Cup each day will be American, with others coming from Asia and parts of Europe.

It is estimated that the tournament – back in Scotland for the first time in 41 years – will bring a £100 million boost to the Scottish economy.

A Gleneagles spokeswoman said: “We do have a limited number of Glenmor homes up for rental during the week of the Ryder Cup. These are in high demand.”
