Russell Knox set for shoot-out with Graeme McDowell

The British duo are tied for the lead on 19-under-par, two shots clear of the field, in the rain-delayed OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico.

Knox and McDowell each had six birdies before the final round at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen was stopped due to darkness after play had been suspended for three-and-a-half hours by thunderstorms.

The second PGA Tour event in a row to require a Monday finish because of bad weather, play is due to resume at 8am local time (1pm UK time) this morning.

Knox, who is bidding to back up his breakthrough win in the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shangai a week past Sunday, moved to the top of the leaderboard by reeling off four birdies in a row from the third.

The 30-year-old returned after the delay to make another gain on the card at the short eighth before claiming his sixth birdie of the day at the par-4 11th.

Having started the final round alongside Knox on 13-under, McDowell, the 2010 US Open champion, made his move with three birdies in a row from the fifth.

He also picked up shots at the 10th and 12th before moving to 19-under after electing to finish the par-5 13th when the horn sounded to suspend play for the day in the fading light.

Knox, who was still on the 13th hole, is fighting tiredness, having travelled halfway across the world to fulfill his commitment to play in the event.

But, when asked about his stamina, the Inverness man replied: “All right, though I’m going to have a mental breakdown next week, probably.”

American Jason Bohn, who chipped in for an eagle on the fifth hole to hold the early lead in the last round before being overtaken by the British pair, is leading the chase on 17-under.

Knox is biddint to become the first player since Colombia’s Camilo Villegas in 2008 to win his first two PGA Tour titles in successive weeks.

The last player to win in consecutive starts on two different continents was Rory McIlroy at the 2014 Open Championship and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
