The 1999 Open champion took to Twitter yesterday to announce a new event for the third-tier circuit – the Paul Lawrie Foundation Granite City Classic.

It will be held at Newmachar on 24-26 June and is likely to feature Lawrie’s own son Craig, who cut his professional teeth this season on the PGA EuroPro Tour.

“We feel the EuroPro is the best UK-based based Tour for young pros to learn their trade,” Lawrie said.

“Our Craig played it this year and loved it.”

The circuit visited four Scottish venues in 2014 – Montrose, The Carrick, Royal Burgess and Mar Hall.

“The standard is very high – I was impressed on the occasions I went to watch Craig play,” added Lawrie. “We felt it was important to bring an event to Aberdeen and Newmachar, which hosts a few events for us already, loved the idea.”

The news comes after the Aberdonian announcing the Paul Lawrie Saltire Energy Match Play, a European Tour event at Murcar Links next year.
