The two prestigious events had already been postponed in their original dates in June due to the ongoing threat posed by the coronavirus.

But hopes they can still be played have been boosted by the R&A confirming an updated 2020 schedule for amateur events and international matches.

The Women’s Amateur Championship has been rescheduled to 25-29 August at Kilmarnock (Barassie) while the Amateur Championship has been slotted in for 25-30 August at Royal Birkdale and West Lancashire.

"These plans are dependent on the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic and we will continue to follow the guidance from the UK Government, health authorities and our own medical consultants," said the R&A in a press release.

The R&A Senior Amateur Championship has also been rescheduled, moving from 29-31 July to 23-25 September at Royal Cinque Ports, Deal.

Meanwhile, the Girls’ Amateur Championship, the Boys' Amateur Championship and the Women’s Senior Amateur Championship are all still in their original scheduled slots.

The girls' event is due to be played from 11-15 August at Southport & Ainsdale, with the boys' equivalent at Moortown and Alwoodley from 11-16 August.

The Women’s Senior Amateur Championship is then due to be next up from 19-21 August at Ashridge.

The R&A Junior Open, which was due to be played from 13-15 July at Littlestone, has been cancelled along with a number of international events.

That list includes the St Andrews Trophy, the Boys’ Home Internationals, the Women’s and Girls’ Home Internationals, the Junior Vagliano Trophy and the Jacques Leglise Trophy and the Men’s and Women’s Senior Home Internationals.
