McArthur back in contention after his early setback

FORMER Scottish Amateur champion Andrew McArthur is on course to pull off one of 
the greatest comebacks in the history of the European Tour Qualifying School.

Even with five rounds to come, the 33-year-old left himself with a mountain to climb after opening with an error-strewn eight-over-par 80 in Girona at the weekend. It left him among the early stragglers in the battle for Tour spots next season, but, with two rounds to go, he has hauled himself back into contention for an all-important top-35 finish. A fourth-round 65, five-under, over the Tour Course at PGA Catalunya hoisted him into a tie for 39th, the group on one-under-par also including compatriot Alastair Forsyth (75).

McArthur bagged six birdies in the day’s joint-best effort. He is among five Scots still in the hunt heading into the final 36 holes after Gary Orr, George Murray and Callum Macaulay also survived the fourth-round cut. Helensburgh veteran Orr (74) and Fifer Murray (71) are tied for 13th on six-under, four ahead of Kincardine man Macaulay after he carded a 74 to slip down to joint-32nd.

Former PGA champion Scott Drummond (73) missed out by a shot as the axe fell at two-over, while it was also the end of the journey for Jamie McLeary (five-over), Raymond Russell 
(six-over) and Wallace Booth (six-over).

Booth, however, had already secured a Challenge Tour for next season after graduating off the PGA EuroPro Tour.

Argentine Tano Goya was joined in a share of the lead 
in Girona by Englishman Andy Sullivan.
