Jon Rahm hoping to swap nappy duties for Masters glory

World No 3 Jon Rahm is short on sleep after becoming a new dad but feeling mentally “refreshed” heading into the 85th Masters.

The Spaniard, who has recorded three straight top-10 finishes in the event, became a father for the first time on Friday after his wife Kelley gave birth to a baby body.

The arrival of Kepa Cahill led to Rahm arriving later than normal, especially for a major, but the 26-year-old is certainly not ruling out his chances of following in the footsteps of Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia by slipping into a Green Jacket on Sunday.

“My concern is that I'm coming to a Masters, and from Thursday to Monday didn't sleep much, didn't hit a single golf shot,” he said. “But definitely mentally in a different state, right.

“A lot of times practising for a major you spend so much time thinking about golf, and for four or five days, it wasn't even on my mind, which is kind of refreshing.

“Coming here later than usual, but I'm here ready to compete. I wouldn't be here otherwise.”

Rahm tied for seventh behind Dustin Johnson in November, having been fourth in 2018 in just his second appearance in the event then ninth the following year.

“I might need to spend a little bit of extra time today hitting lag putts and hitting some chips because the last time we played here it was a little softer and slower, but tee to green it doesn't really change much,” he said.

“Luckily I've played here before, and I always have a good vibe when I come here.”
