Golf: Tons of fun for Swanston New squad

SWANSTON NEW were the winners of the inaugural 'Ton' Trophy, a new mini inter-club handicap competition that also involved Baberton, Mortonhall and Prestonfield.

The connection? All four of the participating clubs have 'Ton' in their name.

The trophy was presented by Derek Dougherty, the Seniors' captain at Swanston New, where the event was held over three consecutive days.

Each club provided a pool of eight players and any four could play on any of the three days. The format was fourball better ball match play and, going into the final day, any one of three clubs could have won.

In the end, Swanston New claimed the honours with six points, having won all three of their matches, with Baberton second, Mortonhall third and the wooden spoonists on this occasion being Prestonfield.

"Everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and thought it was a great success," said Stewart Kerr, Seniors' secretary at Swanston New. "Clubs will take it in turn to host the event once every four years and it's Baberton next year."

Paul Edgar, Ian Campbell, Jocky Elliott, Duncan Thompson, Henry Kelly, Jim MacLeod, Fred Rankin and Bill Woodhouse played for Swanston New in the event.
