Golf: Scottish Ladies’ Open | Northern Open

CARNOUSTIE amateur Jess Meek is still leading the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Scottish Ladies Open Tour Order of Merit after this week’s fifth and sixth events at Downfield and Carnoustie Burnside.

The 19-year-old finished out of the leading six for the first time on Wednesday, when professionals Pamela Pretswell, Pamela Feggans and Holly Clyburn tied for first place with four-under-par 68s.

It’s a Carnoustie 1-2 at the top of the table with second place occupied by Katy McNicoll, who won successive events at Trump International, Deeside and Downfield.

The PGA in Scotland has announced that entries for the 2013 Northern Open at Meldrum House will be accepted from amateur golfers with a handicap of scratch or below.

Any amateur who wishes to play in the tournament on 27-29 August will be required to pre-qualify at Craigielaw on 5 August. The entry fee for the qualifier will be £35, with those who are successful in gaining entry to the tournament required to pay a further £65.

Amateurs have played in the event over the years, though recently they were mainly nominated by the SGU.

Scottish under-16s: French lead way in Portlethen event

It’s “Vive La France” at the top of the halfway scoreboard in the Scottish Under-16 Boys’ Open Championship at Portlethen.

Antoine Kuoch, one of the youngest at under 14 years in the big field, leads at five-under-par 139 after rounds of 69 and 70. His nearest challenger going into the final day’s 36 holes is a slightly older compatriot, Matthieu Caron on 140 with rounds of 68 and 72.

Niall McMullen (Lundin) and or Duncan McNeill (Powfoot) are the leading Scots, three and four behind respectively.

Scottish Senior Women’s: Seeds suffer bad day at West Linton

It was the slaughter of the seeds in the first round of the Scottish Senior Women’s Match-play Championship at West Linton.

The top three seeds – stroke-play champion Anna Telfer (Milngavie), No 2 Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie), the defending champion, and Margaret Tough (Falkirk) – were also knocked out in their first ties. Of the leading eight seeds in the draw, only No 5 Kathleen Webster (Ladybank) survived.
