Golf: Ross Cameron on course to make final stage

ROSS Cameron is leading the Scottish challenge heading into today’s final round of the Alps Tour Qualifying School stage one events at La Cala in Spain.

All three courses at the Costa del Sol are being used for the event, with Cameron and three of his fellow countryman all in action at Campo America.

Having opened with a 71, the Ellon professional required two shots more in his second round but, lying in a tie for seventh on level-par, he is still on course to make the final stage.

Lying two shots behind him in joint-11th is John Henry, the brother of European Tour player Scott carding a 74, which was a mixed bag of four birdies and six bogeys. Another shot back is amateur Christopher Dougill, who is an unknown quantity but kept his hopes of progressing alive with a 71 that included four bogeys as well as a triple-bogey 8.

The top 37 at Campo America qualify, meaning Malcom Isaacs needs to go low today after the former Nairn Dunbar assistant followed an opening 76 with a 78 to sit joint-46th.

England’s Tom Shadbolt leads on that course after a second-round 67. His compatriot, Nick Flynn, is out in front with a round to go on Campo Europa, while yet another English hopeful, Ben Montgomery, is tied for top spot at Campo Asia with Spaniard Jose Maria Orozco and Italian Simone Baroni. Four Scots are already in the field for the final stage, which starts on Monday at the same venue. Among those exempt for that are Michael Stewart, Neil Fenwick, Philip McLean and Paul Shields.
