Golf: Liberton and Pumpherston aiming to reign in Spain

TWO Lothians clubs – Liberton and Pumpherston – are
flying the flag for Scotland in the Home Nations Junior Championship finals in Spain this week.

It’s a second appearance in the title showdown for Liberton but for Pumpherston it’s their first time in the finals of the prestigious event.

Liberton have enjoyed a
tremendous spell with Robert Ross as the Capital club’s junior convenor, winning three Edinburgh Summer League titles, three South East Edinburgh Winter League titles, two
Edinburgh Inter Club crowns and two Scottish Junior
Championships in four years.

Returning to Spain this year are six of the squad of eight that travelled to Murcia two years ago – Anthony Blaney, Daniel Eardley, Scott Finlay, Fraser Christie, Kieran Cantley and Thomas Brock.

Joining forces with them on this occasion are Alan
MacLaren and Billy McPhee and Ross is hopeful his charges can give a good account of themselves at Antequera, near Malaga.

“This competition will be the last as juniors for half of the team as they now move on
to the senior section,” said Ross. “Liberton Golf Club is rightly proud of the teams achievements in the recent past and the members have done their bit helping raise funds to make sure the boys are as well prepared as they can be.”

Pumpherston qualified as runners-up in this year’s
Scottish Championsip at
Panmure.
