Golf: Glencorse to build bridge in honour of Shillinglaw

A POPULAR amateur golfer who died suddenly last year is to be honoured at his Glencorse club by having a bridge named after him.

Neil Shillinglaw was on 
holiday in Spain with his wife and two young sons when he suffered a fatal heart attack aged just 47. “The committee discussed what we could do to remember Neil and, though seats and bells were mentioned, we thought they are ten a 
penny,” said club pro Cliffe Jones.

“So we have decided to build a new bridge at the 18th and name it after him. His two sons will be the first to walk over it.”

To raise money for the project, the Neil Shillinglaw Memorial Tournament will be held at Glencorse on August 31.

It will be open to 40 teams paying £100 each.

“We are hoping it will attract all the leading Lothians lights, the likes of Scott Knowles and Simon Mackenzie, both of whom were friends of Neil,” added Jones. Shillinglaw also had strong connections in the professional game through his job as a sales rep for Acushnet.

“There will be Titleist involvement in the event and we are hoping some of the local pros like Mark Patchett, Alistair McLean and Gordon Law will be playing,” said Jones.

“Through his own golf and his job, Neil was a popular 
figure and we are hoping 
this event will be well 
supported.

“It’s aim this year is to 
provide funding for the bridge and from next year onwards it will probably become an Open tournament for individuals.”
