Club golfer John Plunkett in hole-in-one double

A CLUB golfer is celebrating the rare feat of achieving two holes-in-one in the same round, taking his career tally of aces into double figures.

John Plunkett, a 64-year-old joiner from Oban, chalked up the double playing in a Stableford competition at the town’s Glencruitten course.

A three-time seniors’ club champion, he struck his first blow at the 163-yard fifh hole using a 5-iron. “I saw that one go in and was delighted,” said the six-handicapper.

His second ace was even more impressive, the result of a sweetly-struck rescue club at the 180-yard 17th on the picturesque West Highlands course.

“I couldn’t see where that shot had ended up but one of my playing partners said he thought it was close and I was over the moon when I discovered it was in the hole as well,” added Plunkett, a six-handicapper.

“I’m chuffed to have achieved two holes-in-one in the same round and that takes my total now to ten since I stopped playing for Oban Saints, the local amateur football team, 30 years ago.

“Alan Rough and Bill Barclay were the guests at an annual fundraiser in the club on Saturday night. My feat was mentioned at that and it was certainly celebrated, too.”
