Classic Masters, No 6: 1961

BY halfway, the overwhelming pre-tournament favourites – Arnold Palmer and Gary Player – had moved clear of the field, sharing the lead on five- under. A 69 on the third day gave Player a four-shot lead and, after rain washed out Sunday’s play, he led by six at one point during the final round.

But Palmer – aiming to be the first man to retain the title – went on a charge on the back nine, while his South African opponent dropped shots on the par-5s, and Arnie arrived at the 18th tee with a one-shot lead.

However, he found a greenside bunker with his approach, flashed his third across the green and overcooked his chip back. He missed the 15-foot putt which would have forced a play-off and Player, who made par, became the first overseas golfer to wear a Green Jacket.
